"Lakeway Tribute is an adventurous work of original music written to capture the history, culture, and geography of the Lakeway community of Morristown in East Tennessee commissioned by the Walters State Community Band. Home of the Crockett Tavern Museum, Morristown has a proud connection to the famous American legend Davy Crockett, who returned to his father’s tavern on foot after running away from his home in Tennessee to live in Virginia for several years. The beautiful scenery of the Cherokee Reservoir is appealing as lakefront property, and the culture of Morristown is a tight-knit community that gathers for festivities and events throughout the year.
Lakeway Tribute opens with an adventurous theme that serves as the refrain of a rondo form. The first contrasting theme (m. 36) is meant to evoke the scenic beauty of the region, the peace and serenity of an evening watching the sun set over the lake and the trees. The second contrasting theme (m. 56) represents the festive community spirit of the community, written in the style one might experience at a carnival. The themes are organized in such a way that the listener ‘tours’ the area to experience each of these connections to Lakeway. The “march” section (m. 84) is a solemn reference to Davy Crockett’s final stand at the Alamo, and from this moment forward, the listener is taken ‘back’ the way they were initially immersed. Thus, the listener is taken on a journey into the history, culture, and geography of the area and hopefully leaves with a greater appreciation of the community for which it’s written."
