Spiral Galaxy is an easy piece for beginner band that evokes the vastness of the universe. The opening of the piece begins with a moderately slow tempo as the woodwind section is repeated by the brass and percussion at a louder dynamic. The listeners begin their journey through space. The tempo increases as does the rhythmic intensity taking the listeners through the harsh environment of outer space. Danger is all around as more instruments enter and add new melodies. Finally, the trombones signal that the imminent threat has been overcome with a slow glissando. The opening melody returns signaling that all is well and the voyage can safely continue as the piece reaches its satisfying conclusion. Spiral Galaxy features a limited range for most instruments and showcases many sections. Trombones get a soli glissando that is enjoyable and satisfying for the students to play. This piece also has 2nd trumpet and 2nd clarinet parts that add some easy harmonies for the students to play. Clarinets are kept below the break for ease of play. Spiral Galaxy helps teach musical independence as it focuses on playing interesting rhythms and rich harmonies all within a limited range. This is a great opener for any first or second concert.
