Time To Say Goodbye was composed as a parting gift to a wonderful colleague of the composer, Gary P. Gilroy. Dr. David Fullmer was hired in the spring of 2012 as the Director of Athletic Bands at California State University, Fresno where Dr. Gilroy serves as Director of Bands. Dave Fullmer enjoyed an extremely long and successful career in the state of Utah where he served as Director of Bands at Timpview High School in Orem, Utah as well as Professor at Utah Valley State University and Brigham Young University. Attracting a seasoned veteran to Fresno State as the Director of the Bulldog Marching Band was a major accomplishment in Dr. Gilroy’s opinion. Dr. Gilroy was very excited to work with Fullmer.

Dr. Fullmer was a very highly regarded new faculty member at Fresno State who was doing fantastic things with the program when he was hired away to become Director of Bands at Utah Valley State University in Orem, Utah. Gilroy was very sorry to see Dr. Fullmer leave after just one year. The two colleagues worked very well together. Both had the same vision for their program and they worked in unison towards the same goals, principals and ideas. But new opportunities for Dr. Fullmer were on the horizon and Gilroy had to accept that while the friendship forged during the 2012-2013 school year would always remain, the two colleagues would now work for different institutions. It was indeed, Time To Say Goodbye and to feel fortunate for the one year they had to work together. Dr. Gilroy was very grateful that at least one generation of Fresno State students had the opportunity to learn from such a master teacher. Dr. David Fullmer was only on campus for one year at Fresno State but he left an indelible mark on the program in many ways. He will be sorely missed!
