Have you made arrangements for band camp yet? Band camp serves several purposes from giving a refresher for returning marching students and a pre-season education prior to the new season for new students, more time to practice to kids making new friends and experiencing new things. Here are our top tips for a great band camp experience for everyone.
Pro tip 1: Host your new/incoming members a day or two in advance! Take a day to invite the newer students to get to know the teachers and section leaders. Let them get used to the schedule and know what to expect.
Pro tip 2: Set expectations for students and parents. Provide as much information as possible well in advance about schedules, dress codes, materials needed and resources for those needing support to participate.
Pro tip 3: Strong student leadership is always important in a band program, this year will be no different. If you have not already, schedule a day or two to meet with your leadership prior to band camp to help get them prepared for the upcoming season.
Pro tip 4: Consider health and safety first. The National Association for Music Education provides health and safety ideas ranging from hats and hydration to warm-ups and weather preparation.
Pro tip 5: Make time for fun. Start with team building even before playing a note. Listen to students’ favorite music or play music games just for fun. Remember why we all love music!
Pro tip 6: If you haven’t picked your marching music for fall, there’s still time. Need a quick change of music because what you’ve inherited isn’t what your team needs? Check out our Budget Series, which come in a range of challenging levels, but without exclusivity for competitions. Ideal for new-to-the-school band directors without time or access to the school’s catalog of music. Great if band camp is right around the corner.
Thanks to all the band directors and color guard coaches working with students over the summer. We know what dedication it takes and appreciate what you’re doing to #InspireTheNextGeneration.
