When did you first learn to do the Peggy Spin in colorguard?

As part of our Women's History Month stories we're looking back at women who have improved the Performing Arts.

We honor Margaret “Peggy” Twiggs for inventing the foundational flag spin. When Twiggs was in high school in the early 1960s, she wanted to join the drum line, but couldn’t because she was female. Instead she joined the colorguard, which at the time merely showed the flags military-style at different angles. Bored one day, she started twirling her flag, and revolutionized the field.

In 1967, she began marching in the Drum Corps International (DCI) with a group which eventually became the 27th Lancers. Her drill instructor saw her spinning routines and asked her to create “trick lines,” and the rest is history. The technique covers posture, strength, position, timing, balance and more.  Twiggs was inducted in the DCI Hall of Fame five years ago.

From the GPG Music family, we salute you Peggy!
